FHV2013 Supports Vietnam’s Efforts to Raise Profile of Local Franchise Market
Vietnam’s leading international food & hospitality trade event will outline vital steps and impart business insights on franchising to keen industry professionals
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 11 December 2012 – With foreign direct investments making the bulk of Vietnam’s gross domestic product, the government has devised different ways to attract more foreign companies to capitalise in Vietnam, and to encourage local industry professionals to start new businesses. Franchising has been earmarked as one of the key areas for growth in Vietnam.
Vietnam’s food and hospitality industry favourable for business growth
Vietnam’s government recognises franchising as a good opportunity for foreign businesses to introduce their brands to the Vietnamese market, as it is a favourable avenue for small and medium size Vietnamese entrepreneurs to embark on new ventures and with lower capital investment. Many franchise outlets have since sprouted out, as one can see popular brands such as Jollibee and Paris Baguette when one walks along the streets in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
According to statistics offered by Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, the food and beverage retail sector valued estimated at $33.7 billion last year. Experts have pointed out that the size of the Vietnamese F&B and hospitality markets are expanding, and there is potential for franchised businesses to grow even further. Consumers’ tastes and demands have evolved, allowing them to be more open to trying out brands that have already been established in other parts of the world. This, coupled with increasing presence of well-known brands already entrenched in the local scene, are generating more business franchising opportunities, and sustaining the market’s attractiveness to the eyes of foreign companies keen to gain a slice of the ever-growing pie.
Vietnam’s leading F&B trade show addresses latest industry trend
Come 25 April 2013, industry professionals, which include investors, major retailers and property developers, attending Food&HotelVietnam2013 (FHV2013) can be a part of a not-to-be missed seminar cum workshop event that is specially designed to outline to local and foreign companies the necessary steps professionals and enterprises need to know in order to enter Vietnam’s market through franchising.
Led by Asiawide Franchise, who provides franchising and business consultants for booming Asian economies, the Franchising Seminar will provide industry professionals a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s franchising landscape, as well as offer insights on how to go start a franchised business. The seminar will also introduce the importance of intellectual property rights to franchising in Vietnam. Renowned Vietnamese lawyer, Mr. Tran Man Hung, will be speaking at the Franchising Seminar, focusing on addressing the importance of intellectual property – trade mark registration of the brands.
Principal and Managing Lawyer of BMWN International LLC – a licensed law firm and IP agent in alliance with Baker & McKenzie Vietnam Offices, Mr. Tran has been assisting multinational and local clients on executing franchising related matters in Vietnam. Of particular interest is his recent experience advising on the review of standard franchise agreements and franchise registrations. He also has, under his belt, extensive experience providing training on franchising laws and practices on Vietnam Television, and will be more than qualified to advise on the matters pertaining to franchising in Vietnam.
The seminar will also unveil informative presentations by some of Singapore’s highly successful businesses with current franchised outlets, such as Loy Kee Chicken Rice, Polar Puffs & Cakes and RamenTen.
An effective springboard into Vietnam’s vibrant foodservice & hospitality industry
Delegates attending the seminar held at FHV2013 will be kept busy not only at the seminar but outside as well. FHV2013, Vietnam’s most established and choice business platform for professionals from the food and hospitality industry, will occupy 8,880 square metres of exhibition space to house a lively mix of over 380 exhibitors from 30 countries/regions. The extensive list of exhibitors also includes more than 10 international group pavilions that will be parading their local fares on the show floor, offering the latest products and innovative solutions for Vietnam’s food and hospitality industry. Also adding to the busy exhibition floor will be three exciting competitions specially tailored for Vietnamese F&B professionals – Latte Art Challenge, Vietnam Barista Competition (VBC) and Vietnam Culinary Challenge (VNCC).

Food&HotelVietnam2013 – Cambodia’s Springboard into Vietnam’s Vibrant Foodservice & Hospitality Industry
Offers wide exposure to F&B and hospitality markets in Vietnam and beyond
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, November 2012 – To be held from 24 – 26 April 2013 at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center (SECC), Food&HotelVietnam2013 (FHV2013) will occupy 8,880 square metres of exhibition space to house a vibrant mix of over 380 exhibitors from 30 countries/regions, each offering the latest products and innovative solutions for Vietnam’s food and hospitality industry.
With Vietnam being observed as one of Asia’s fast-emerging business destinations, many international brands are looking to expand their presence in this region. Vietnam’s leading biennial food and hospitality trade show will present a window of opportunity to regional and international exhibitors who are keen to enter Vietnam and establish important contacts with local distributors and sellers from across the region. In addition, they will also be exposed to exclusive opportunities to extend their reach into budding markets outside Vietnam, namely the rest of the Indochina regions – Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
The hospitality industry in Cambodia is expanding rapidly. According to Asian Development Bank service sector report, the real share of the hotels and restaurant sector in Cambodia has grown from occupying 1.5 percent back in 1993, to 4.9 per cent in 2011. This number will continue to grow as Cambodia sees an increase in the number of tourists visiting the country. Data from the Cambodia National Institute of Statistics showed an increase of 14.9 per cent in 2011 as compared to the previous years. The Cambodian hospitality industry would be able to leverage on FHV2013 to reach out source for new products and equipment not currently available within their country, and also to extend their business network to other brands in the region.
“Into its 7th edition, FHV has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception in 2004, and is now firmly established as a must-attend trade show in the mindsets of the Vietnamese food and hospitality communities. Never taking a backseat, we continuously review ways to evolve the event’s format so that it can better serve our participants,” states Ms. Ting Siew Mui, Project Director of Lifestyle Events from show organiser, Singapore Exhibition Services (SES).
“This year, exhibitors can leverage on our extended focus outside of Vietnam to the growing markets of Indochina as we work with the local media and related associations to further widen industry’s awareness of regional participants. With the presence of visitors from countries such as Cambodia, international exhibitors will be able to take the opportunity to bring their products to shores which extends beyond the Vietnam region, thereby presenting an even more effective “Asian” gateway for the international market.”
Following FHV2011’s footsteps, FHV2013 will continue to present a wide mixture of international group pavilions, each supported by their respective government bodies or trade associations. More than 10 international group pavilions will be unveiled, all eager to market a myriad of indigenous flavours and food production capabilities.
Addresses Purchasing Patterns of Vietnam’s Foodservice and Hospitality Industry
Visitors to the last edition of the show were impressed with the myriad of products and services which were present at the exhibition. Many of the 12,000 attendees who were present at FHV2011 vowed to return for the 2013 show in Ho Chi Minh City:
“We visited Food&HotelVietnam to source for new kitchen equipment and imported beef. We’re also here to meet up with some of our current suppliers, and also to gain supplier contacts. We will come back for Food&HotelVietnam in 2013,” states Mr. Song Teng, Executive Chef, Hotel Cambodiana.
“This is my first visit to Food&HotelVietnam. I was recommended to attend this event by our supplier LSH (Cambodia). We were here to visit some suppliers and to look for new kitchen equipment. The exhibition is well-organised and the people are friendly here. I look forward to return for Food&HotelVietnam2013!” enthused Mr. F.S. Chong, Operation Director, Cambodia Air Catering Services Pte Ltd.
Show organisers also chartered a VIP bus to bring visitor group delegations from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to the show. The visitors’ participation is paramount to testifying the strong relevance of FHV and its stature as the premier platform that specifically caters to purchasing needs of the food and hospitality establishments of Vietnam and the Indochina region.
With the presence of renowned international brands such as Hyperlux, Ocean Glass, Precor and WinterHalter, local foodservice and hospitality communities will be able to peruse the wide range of products and services that will be displayed across the show floor of FHV2013, and make purchasing decisions that can add benefit to their business over an extended period.
Cultivating Local Talent through Respected Competitions
Adding to the busy show floor will be two exciting competitions specially tailored for Vietnamese F&B professionals – Vietnam Barista Competition (VBC) and Vietnam Culinary Challenge (VNCC).
Vietnam Barista Competition (VBC)
VBC will be attracting top-notch baristas from all over Vietnam to compete. VBC contestants will be judged by a panel of distinguished experts from the coffee industry. The panel will be headed by Mr. Ross Bright, Master Roaster at Spinelli Coffee and a certified World Barista Championship judge, 2008 – 2009. As part of the award, the winner will get the exclusive opportunity to compete against national champions from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Taiwan and more at the FHA Barista Challenge 2014 held in Singapore alongside the brand new SpecialityCoffee&Tea exhibition at Asia’s largest food & hospitality trade show, Food&HotelAsia2014 (FHA2014).
Vietnam Culinary Challenge (VNCC)
Organised by the Saigon Professional Chefs Guild, VNCC aims to elevate the stature of Vietnamese cooking. Now in its 5th edition, the competition will see various local chefs from reputable restaurants and hotels pit against one another to win the coveted title of Grand Champion. Both events aim to promote the culinary and coffee scenes in Vietnam, allowing budding chefs and barista to gain recognition through the challenges, as well as enabling established chefs and coffee connoisseurs to grow through healthy competition.
“The Saigon Professional Chefs’ Guild is proud to be organising the 5th edition of “Vietnam Culinary Challenge” at FHV2013. With over 12 categories of competition, ranging from Vietnamese Cuisine to Chinese Cooking and Plated Desserts, and over 180 competitors expected to be participating in these events across three days, VNCC2013 would definitely raise the culinary standards and support the dreams of aspiring chefs from hospitality settlements across Vietnam. The backing by many local and international organisations for this event also indicates the increased focus placed on raising the culinary standards in Vietnam, and I’m glad FHv2013 is bringing VNCC back once again,” says Mr. Norbert Ehrbar, Vice President of the Saigon Professional Chefs’ Guild.

Strategic Date Change Announced for Food&HotelVietnam
Move to Earlier Date Well-Received by Local Vietnamese Business Communities
Singapore, 19 January 2012 – Food&HotelVietnam (FHV), the biennial premier trade show dedicated to the foodservice and hospitality industry in Vietnam, will be brought forward by five months in a strategic and long-term move to match the buying cycles of the Vietnamese market. Organised by Allworld member, Singapore Exhibition Services Pte Ltd(SES) and local co-organiser, VCCI Exhibition Service (VCCI), the next edition of FHV will now be held from 24 to 26 April 2013, at the same venue, Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center (SECC) at District 7 in Ho Chi Minh City.
With the annual year-end festive season, the peak period for Vietnam’s foodservice and hospitality industry usually lasts from September to March. As such, there is a notable increase in the buying of equipment, as well as food and drink supplies between themonth of April and September. Moving FHV forward allows exhibitors to meet with buyers during the important purchasing period, as well as the growth of the exhibition, conferences, associated seminars, workshops and competitions.
“SES is always striving to bring our events to a higher level by listening to, and incorporating feedback, from our exhibitors and visitors. With the fast-moving nature of Vietnam’s foodservice and hospitality industry, we have to constantly evolve to keep up with the times. By moving the dates from September to April, the local foodservice and hospitality communities will be able to peruse the wide range of products and services that will be displayed across the exhibition show floor, and make purchasing decisions that can add benefit to their business over a longer period of time,” says Ms. Ting Siew Mui, Project Director of Lifestyle Events, SES.
This move has been well-received by the major participants in the Vietnamese foodservice and hospitality industry, who have confirmed that they will attend the show before making any major purchasing decisions. An additional benefit is that it moves FHV into an easier month for exhibitors, given the fact that September is highly congested with food and hospitality shows both in Asia and around the world.
“September to March is always the most hectic period for the hospitality and foodservice industry, especially in Asia where we have the Lunar New Year just weeks after Christmas and the New Year. As such, it’s great to hear that FHV2013 is moving forward from September to April as it allows the industry more time to purchase equipment and food and drink supplies,” Mr. Norbert Ehrbar, Vice President of Saigon Professional Chefs’ Guild affirms.
“The change in date not only fits the buying patterns in Vietnam, it also fits in with the Asian markets as well. This is also important with the mooncake production that starts in July, so preparations have to be made before that. With this date change, and missing the high season month of September, it actually means that I can have a bigger team attending the show,” says Chef Vincent Tan, Executive Chef at Equatorial Hotel, Vietnam.
Following the success of its previous edition in 2011, FHV2013 will see the return of industry acclaimed competitions such as the 3rd edition of Vietnam Barista Competition and the 5th Vietnam Culinary Challenge.
